Meet Our Professional Homegirl of the Week: Mickey
1. Social Handles (personal and business)
2. What do you do and what does a day of your work looks like?
I have multiple titles: I’m a researcher, I have a PhD in biology (you can learn more about my research here) and I actually came to NY for a postdoc at Princeton University. I’ve worked for many years in education and conservation. I have a lot of experience with wildlife and I’m currently one of the leaders at This is My Earth (TiME), a nonprofit organization that strives to preserve and conserve biodiversity hotspots. Moving from Israel to NY was very stressful for me and it changed my world upside down. I left the academic track and started my own photography business. Today, I’m a vlogger, leading “New York Live with Mickey”. I took upon myself to be the daily friendly face for anyone who is looking for kindness or looking to be a little less lonely in the world. In addition, I give live updates on anything new / exciting / unusual that happens in the city.
3. What motivates you?
Helping others and making the most out of each and every day of my life. Showing the world as it is now, without any manipulations. I can’t count the number of times I’ve reached a destination and was so disappointed by the dissonance between what I saw on social media and real life. With the live walks there are no manipulations, you know what to expect. To me that is meaningful.
4. How do you balance with your career, side hustles, and your social life?
Being my own boss I’m flexible with my schedule, which makes it super easy to balance between all the different aspects of my life. Also, I really enjoy what I do, so even if I’m working during the weekend or spending hours looking for interesting events in the city, I enjoy it so much it doesn’t feel like work.
5. What does Professional Homegirl mean to you?
Best friend, a girl I can trust on both the emotional and the professional levels. Someone who inspires me to be a better person, as a human being and as a business woman.
6.What advice would you give to young women that want to pursue their dreams?
Be kind & unstoppable. Keep on going, even at times when you feel like everything around you is breaking, just keep on going. It’s easier to get to the top if you are having a positive and meaningful impact on others.
