2. What do you do and what does a day of your work look like?

I am a fashion merchandiser by day and owner and cake designer of my own cake studio called Sugar with Style. Nothing can be done without first a little prep and organization. Once my checklist is complete I start working on the production of my orders -baking cakes, making fillings and buttercream and LOTS of puppy breaks with my dog Penny Lane. The following days are when the fun happens. I can start on decorating and taking photos for the gram, of course! A day in the life is not always as glamorous as it may seem. What people don’t always get to see is the pile of dishes in my sink after pulling an all-nighter or the sprinkle crumbs that line the floors of my kitchen but even though it is hard work and long hours it is so rewarding to see your work come to life.

3. What motivates you?

The outcome of course! The reaction of my clients when they see what I have made for them is priceless. Every time I finish a project even the ones that make me want to poke my eyes out (lol) I get an endorphin high! As soon as I post it up on social media and get that overwhelming positive feedback from my followers I feel that is was all worth it and I cannot wait to for the next one.

4. How do you balance with your career, side hustles, and your social life?

Want to know the truth! Sometimes there is no balance. Hear me out… at times I have to make my day job* the priority other times my family or my business. For me, whatever is the most important thing going on at the moment will trump everything else. I like to give my full attention to each facet of my life and sometimes that means making sacrifices for things to work. The most important thing is to make sure that whatever you are doing you are giving it your all. When we put too much on our plate all at once sometimes these things start to fall apart. Take it one thing at a time and I promise everything will balance itself out.

5. What does Professional Homegirl mean to you?

First of all, a round of applause for this clever movement... Professional Homegirl! I think this stands for all the badass girls and women alike who fight for what they want and work like hell to keep it going. Most importantly it’s about collaboration and celebration for other women. We must stick together by supporting each other and encouraging each other.

6. What advice would you give to young women that want to pursue their dreams?

DO NOT listen to the negativity, do not listen to anyone who tries to dim your light or put your ideas down. Keep going, if you’ve found something you love, nurture it, work hard at it and don’t give up. Often times we let our failures dictate our next move and we give up. Take those failures and turn them into triumphs. Believe in yourself and sooner or later you’ll have the world believing in you too! Much love to all the future professional homegirls out there!
