Meet Our Professional Homegirl of the Week: Melissa Etienne

1. Social Handles (personal and business)

2. What do you do?

My name is Melissa Etienne and I am the owner of Big Chop Hair Extensions. I am a mother and a wife.

3. What motivates you?

My family is my motivation. My family doesn’t just include my husband and children: it also includes my mother, sister, nephew, and brother. I asked my mother to stop working as a traveling nurse two years ago to help me with my kids because I was terrified to hire a nanny. Knowing that my mom gave up her career so I can be an entrepreneur keeps me on my toes because I do not want to disappoint her.

4. How do you balance with your career, side hustles, and your social life?

My business is home based so I am always with my children and my business. Those two things are always happening and are second nature to me at this point.

My social life is my husband. He is the only reason I put aside time where I cannot be disturbed. I focus solely on him and our relationship. He has my undivided attention and I have his. My husband and I have set days where we only tend to each other and it honestly keeps us sane and gives us the energy we need to take on anything that comes our way.

5. What does Professional Homegirl mean to you?

I own a hair company---in order to sell a woman hair I have to be able to connect with her. I have to be her homegirl if I want her to feel comfortable enough to accept the suggestions I give her. A professional homegirl needs to be able to run her business in a way that her customers respect her business but feel like they are more than just customers. I’ve done that. I’ve turned my customer into my homies. They literally send me dms telling me I am their best friend in their head and that makes me happy.

6. What advice would you give to young women that want to pursue their dreams?

My advice is to start today! So many people are waiting for a perfect time to start doing something. There is no perfect time. You don’t need to start pursuing your dream on a Monday  or on the first of the month. Just wake up and do what it is that you are trying to do.
